What exactly is periodontal disease ?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a localized infection of the tissues that support the teeth. In the early stages, inflammation only affects the gums. This is known as gingivitis, a common and relatively harmless condition that is easy to treat.
However, if left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis. Inflammation spreads to affect the gum, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. Pockets of bacteria form between the gum and tooth-supporting tissues, leading to loosening and even loss of the most severely affected teeth.

A thorough examination of your gums and teeth will reveal the presence of periodontal disease. If necessary, the specialist will also take an X-ray of your teeth to determine the nature and severity of the inflammation before drawing up a treatment plan. This is especially helpful for detecting any bone loss associated with periodontal disease.
In the vast majority of cases, the specialist will perform a scaling procedure to remove the plaque and tartar at the root of the disease. The appointment concludes with a polishing session to soften and clean away any stains that may have accumulated on the surface of your teeth.
Root planing, also known as tooth surfacing or curettage, is a non-surgical treatment performed under local anesthetic to clean and sanitize the periodontium. The periodontist removes tartar and bacterial deposits from the root of the tooth using manual instruments or ultrasound technology.
Periodontal surgery is required in some cases. Performed under local anesthetic, this technique involves lifting the gums to give the specialist direct access to deeper periodontal pockets. A gum graft may then be required to reinforce the gum or cover a bare root.
